Financial institutions increasingly consider the environmental and geological significance of landscapes when making investment decisions. Natural heritage sites, such as volcanic regions and national parks,  are valued not only for their ecological importance, but also for their scientific, cultural, and economic roles. Because of this, banks often apply additional requirements when financing developments in or near these areas.

This reflects a broader understanding that natural landscapes, much like cultural heritage, are long-term assets. This post explores how volcanic landscapes influence development, tourism, and financial decision-making.


1. Volcanic Landscapes and Natural Heritage
Heritage in environmental finance involves protecting significant natural sites during development projects, as they carry ecological and scientific importance. Volcanic landscapes are particularly valuable due to their geological history and their role in attracting global tourism. I recently visited Tenerife, where I explored Teide National Park and the surrounding volcanic terrain. 

Despite having travelled across several continents, the landscape felt entirely unfamiliar. The ground was layered in volcanic rock and ash tones, with unexpected colors such as purple, orange, and green vegetation scattered across the terrain. Some rock formations appeared almost sculptural, resembling figures shaped by time and pressure.

A financial institution would likely require detailed environmental impact assessments before approving funding. Developers may need to redesign infrastructure to reduce disruption to the landscape, limit construction near fragile geological formations, and ensure compliance with conservation regulations. Banks may also encourage sustainable tourism measures, such as controlled visitor access, conservation funding contributions, and long-term environmental monitoring systems.


2. Scientific Research and Environmental Monitoring
Natural heritage sites also play an important role in scientific research. Volcanic regions in particular provide valuable insight into geological processes, climate systems, and planetary comparisons. During my visit, the terrain of Teide National Park highlighted how such environments can function as natural laboratories. The landscape is often used by researchers studying volcanic activity and earth formation, as well as testing technologies designed for planetary exploration due to its Mars-like conditions.

A financial institution could support this by funding systems that track volcanic activity, erosion patterns, and ecosystem changes. This may include investment in data collection technology, partnerships with universities and research centers, and educational initiatives for visitors. Banks may also support the creation of digital monitoring platforms that help authorities respond to environmental changes in real time, strengthening both safety and conservation efforts.


3. Sustainable Tourism and Local Communities
Tourism is a key economic driver in volcanic regions such as Tenerife, but it must be carefully balanced with environmental preservation. Sustainable development ensures that natural landscapes remain intact while still supporting local economies. During my stay, I observed how tourism and everyday island life coexist naturally. The atmosphere was relaxed and social, with people gathering in public spaces, enjoying beaches, and moving through lively streets filled with music and conversation.

One of the most memorable moments of the trip was also the kindness of strangers who helped me navigate the island when I was lost. Their willingness to assist without hesitation reflected a strong sense of community and openness.

        Example 3 - Let’s say there are plans for Eco-Tourism Near a Volcanic Landscape

Banks could support this through funding environmentally responsible developments such as low-impact visitor centers, renewable energy systems, and sustainable transport solutions. Financial backing may also extend to conservation programs and local business initiatives, ensuring that tourism growth benefits surrounding communities while preserving the natural environment.


Conclusion
Tenerife highlights how natural heritage, economic development, and human life are closely interconnected, with volcanic landscapes serving not only as striking environments but also as long-term assets that influence scientific research, tourism, and financial decision-making. My visit showed both the scale of Teide’s volcanic terrain and the quiet resilience of the communities living within it, from the dramatic national park to everyday island life and simple acts of kindness.

I've seen so many documentaries about volcanoes. I wouldn't mind visiting one as a tourist, but I wouldn't want to live near one!

We've never visited any volcanic areas, but whenever we go anywhere in nature, we always follow all the rules because everything is so connected. it's all to keep the environment safe.

Now this is really interesting. I’ve watched many documentaries about volcanoes myself, but actually being able to explore them up close and learn more about them firsthand has to be such an amazing experience.
